Heat pump cost in Ireland

Heat-pump installation is a substantial home project. The final price depends on the property, the existing heating system, the heat loss of the home and the amount of distribution or hot-water work required. HomePlanIQ treats the figures below as planning information, not a contractor quotation.

Indicative installation costs

HomePlanIQ uses SEAI completed energy-upgrade median cost data for January to December 2025. It then applies a HomePlanIQ planning spread of 12% below to 15% above the stored median. These are not SEAI-published low and high percentiles.

The stored apartment median and planning range are shown separately because grant limits for apartments differ from the house grant bundle.

Current SEAI heat-pump grants

For qualifying houses, the current Heat Pump System grant bundle can total up to €12,500 when all relevant components apply:

  • up to €6,500 for the heat-pump system
  • up to €2,000 for required central-heating upgrade works
  • a €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus where an eligible oil, gas, solid-fuel or electric-storage heating system is replaced

Apartment limits differ and must not be assumed to be the €12,500 house bundle. The calculator stores an apartment heat-pump system limit of €4,500 and an apartment central-heating upgrade limit of €1,000. The Technical Assessment grant is €200 where the relevant requirements are met.

These are potential amounts, not automatic payments. Homes must meet SEAI eligibility requirements, and the final amount depends on the property, the work, supporting evidence and official approval. See the official SEAI heat-pump grant information.

Is your home heat-pump ready?

Heat pumps perform best when the home is appropriately insulated and the heating system can deliver comfortable heat at lower flow temperatures. A heat-loss assessment and a suitable design are important before committing to an installation.

Homes built before 2007 may require an SEAI technical assessment unless an appropriate valid BER demonstrates the required insulation standard. A calculator result cannot establish the final technical or grant position for a particular home.

Radiators, underfloor heating and additional works

Existing radiators may be suitable, but some homes need larger or additional emitters to provide enough heat at the lower temperatures used by a heat pump. Underfloor heating can work well with a heat pump, although adapting an existing floor can involve significant building work.

Other work that may affect the project includes a hot-water cylinder, pipework, controls, electrical capacity, insulation, ventilation, removal of an old heating system and making good after installation. The HomePlanIQ cost source specifically notes that radiator, underfloor-heating and hot-water-cylinder upgrades may add to the final cost.

Common heat-pump types

  • Air-to-water: extracts heat from outdoor air and supplies a wet central-heating and hot-water system.
  • Ground-source: extracts heat from the ground through buried collectors or boreholes and needs suitable site conditions.
  • Air-to-air: delivers warm air directly and is a different system from a wet central-heating installation.

The grant route and technical requirements depend on the system and property. Confirm the current position with SEAI and an appropriately qualified installer.

Grant and application considerations

  • Check the current SEAI rules before arranging work or relying on a grant estimate.
  • Confirm the home’s build and occupancy details, BER or assessment position, and existing heating system.
  • Use an appropriately registered contractor and keep the documentation required for the application.
  • Do not treat a potential grant as a quotation discount until SEAI has approved the application.

Grant figures use the existing SEAI grant record, checked on 2026-09-09, and should be confirmed against the official SEAI source.
