Indicative costs
HomePlanIQ uses current irish solar-thermal installed pricing for this guide, covering 2026 planning range. Where a stored median is available, the displayed range applies the existing HomePlanIQ planning spread. These figures are planning information, not quotations or guarantees.
Planning range for a typical domestic solar-hot-water system. Collector type, cylinder changes, roof access and plumbing layout can move the final price.
Current SEAI grant position
The stored Solar Water Heating Individual Grant is a flat potential amount of €1,200 for qualifying homes. The current record says the measure is for qualifying homes built and occupied before 2021, but all current SEAI requirements and application conditions still apply.
This is not a guaranteed payment. Confirm the current position with the official SEAI solar-water-heating information.
How solar thermal works
Solar thermal collectors use sunlight to heat water, usually through a cylinder and a dedicated circulation system. It can contribute to domestic hot water, but it is different from solar PV, which generates electricity.
Roof orientation, pitch, shading and available collector area affect the design. The cylinder, pump station, controls, pipe route and connection to the existing hot-water system also need to be considered.
Possible additional work
- replacing or adapting a hot-water cylinder
- running insulated pipework between the roof and cylinder
- checking roof structure, access and weathering details
- commissioning controls and integrating backup heating
